Capital has entered Greek education for providing services like food, in
order to extract profit. This is another aspect of the privatization of
the university, following the altering of wage relations both in the
members of staff and the administrative personnel, the altering of free
provision of books, shelter, and transport for student as well as the
application of fees. This policy follows EU ideology and directives and
is applied by all the governments of the last 30 years serving
capitalists; both by the PASOK and New Democracy.
In the context of the crisis that is unfolding at the expense of the
working class, the managing company of the student restaurant in
Rethymno decided to rise the price of the portion of meal from 0,70€ to
2,70€.
Students reacted climaxing their resistance with the occupation of the
restaurant after the initiative of Struggling Front of Students (MAS).
Further, the restaurant was expropriated and free food was provided to
students on the 10/09/2010.
The struggle of the students goes on under the claim for free provision
of food, shelter and transport, as well as everything that is necessary
for the children of the working class to be able to have access to
higher education.
IIPPE, as a group of progressive scientists and in agreement with its
founding principles, cannot but condemn any invasion of private capital
in higher education and express its solidarity to the student movement
and claims.
Furthermore we, as members of higher education institutions and as
victims of capitalist attacks on our science and rights, support
students on their struggle for another society beyond capitalism.
Although, this could appear as just a rise in price for food provision,
it is not. It is another piece of the chain of attacks against student
and popular rights in Greece and Europe.
